I honestly don’t know why I read these books. They have such a depressing tone to them but I get sucked into them and can’t seem to put them down.
This World We Live In is the third book in The Last Survivors series written by Susan Beth Pfeffer. When the moon is pushed closer to the Earth in Life As We Knew It, terrible catastrophes hit the world and most of the population is lost.
What comes next for Miranda and her family is a story of struggle, heartache, lose, and love.
There were parts of This World We Live In that I loved – I loved that Pfeffer brought together the characters from the previous books, I loved that there were new relationships formed, and I loved that it wasn’t all rainbows and puppy dogs – the survivors are living ROUGH.
But then, there are things that I didn’t like – I felt like some of the events that took place were way to unbelievable, I thought some of the relationships were CRAZY, and I HATE that it is written in diary form.
I think the diary form is what annoys me to no end – I don’t like the way Miranda narrates everything. It is totally unbelievable to think that she could write down all those conversations words for word.
I just really dislike this writing style and was so hoping it wouldn’t be in diary form (the second book was not and I enjoyed it much more).
I listened to an audio download from the library to read this book and I’ve gotta say – it was not my favorite. There is something about the reader that just gets under my skin.
She read the first book as well and I didn’t care for her then either. It MIGHT be because I hate the diary writing so much that it just makes it that much harder to listen to – I’m not sure.
I will say she does do a good job of telling the story and giving the characters a “voice” when they don’t even really have one because of the diary format.
The ending of this book KILLED me. I did not expect it to end the way it did and if there is not another one I’m gonna be one pissed off chick.
I need to know what happens after that ending. With all of its flaws, This World We Live In redeemed itself with the last few chapters of the book and drew me back into the characters and stories.
It is not something I would read again but I would like to know what happens next to those that survived.
