Enid Blyton is one of the most beloved children’s authors of all time. Her timeless stories of innocence and adventure have captivated young readers for almost a century, and they’re still a mainstay on kid’s bookshelves around the world today. 

If you or your children are ready to embark on an Enid Blyton adventure, then you won’t want to miss this post. I’ll be introducing you to the first books in many of her fantastic series, and I’ll also suggest a few of my all-time favorites too.

So, without further ado, here are 14 of the best Enid Blyton books that will delight readers of all ages.

1. Five on a Treasure Island (The Famous Five: Book 1)

This one is Blyton’s first book of this series and beloved one. Famous Five series follows Julian, Dick, Anne, George, and of course, little Timmy the dog as they set out on a quest to find hidden treasure on the shores of Kirrin Island. 

But as they hunt for clues in an abandoned shipwreck, they realize they’re not the only ones in search of the treasure. Can they work together to solve the riddles hidden in the mysterious vessel, or will someone else beat them to it?

2. The Enchanted Wood (The Faraway Tree: Book 1)

Sisters Jo, Bessie, and Fanny have moved to the country, and when they arrive, they discover something truly amazing. There’s an enchanted wood right outside their front door. 

Inside the wood is the magical Faraway Tree, full of extraordinary worlds. And awaiting inside those wonderful worlds is a collection of even more amazing characters who are about to become their new best friends. 

3. The Twins at St Clare’s (St. Clare’s: Book 1) 

Some people imagine life at a boarding school to be pretty dull, but that’s certainly not the case for twins Pat and Isabel O’Sullivan. They’re determined to cause a stir at St Clare’s, but their mischievous plans soon begin to go wrong.

They’re getting into a whole lot of trouble at their new school, and if they ever want to fit in and make friends, they’ll need to clean up their act. And thus, the twins decide to control their mischief, settle into life at their new school, and play by the rules – at least for now.

4. First Term at Malory Towers (Malory Towers: Book 1)

Darrell Rivers is the new girl at Malory Towers boarding school. All the other kids started two terms ago, so she’s got a lot of work to do if she’s going to make new friends and fit in. 

But from the moment she arrives, she’s thrilled. There’s so much to enjoy, from swimming to playing new and exciting games, and even her classes aren’t so bad (well, at least most of them!)

And best of all, she’s made two new best friends, Sally and Mary Lou. Darrell can’t wait to see what the future at Malory Towers has in store for her.

5. The Mystery of the Burnt Cottage (The Five Find-Outers: Book 1)

When a mysterious fire destroys a cottage in the village, Fatty, Daisy, Larry, Pip, Bets, and Buster (the dog) decide to investigate. 

They form a detective alliance, the ‘Five Find-Outers and the Dog,’ and vow to find out the truth about who started the blaze. But what they discover surprises the whole village, including the local policeman, Mr. Goon.

6. The Adventures of the Wishing-Chair (The Wishing Chair: Book 1)

Siblings Mollie and Peter are on the hunt for the perfect gift for their mother. When they enter an antique store, they find something more incredible than they ever could’ve imagined. To their astonishment, they find a magic chair that can fly through the air and grant wishes to whoever sits inside it!

And so they embark on a wonderful adventure that takes them to a whole host of unique places, from a castle made by giants to a disappearing island and even the Land of Dreams. 

7. Naughty Amelia Jane! (Amelia Jane: Book 1)

Amelia Jane is a very naughty girl, and as her toys know all too well, she’s the terror of the toy cupboard. The poor pink rabbit has had his tail snipped off, soldier Tom has been soaked with water, and if they don’t do anything to stop her reign of terror, it’s only going to get worse! 

So the toys in the cupboard conspire to teach Amelia a lesson in the hopes of changing her ways. But can anyone get through to this naughty little girl?

8. The Secret Seven (The Secret Seven: Book 1)

In the first installment of the series, siblings Peter and Janet join forces with their friends George, Jack, Barbara, Pam, and Colin (and their little spaniel Scamper) to form a super sleuth league, The Secret Seven. 

They meet regularly at their top-secret headquarters in the shed at the bottom of Peter and Janet’s garden, where no one can enter without the club badge and password. 

But one day, Jack leaves his badge in a field overlooked by a spooky old house. And when he sets off on a hunt to find it, he also discovers the first of many mysteries that only the Secret Seven can solve.

My All-Time Favourite Books by Enid Blyton

You don’t need to start at the beginning of a series to enjoy Enid Blyton’s books, so here’s a selection of my personal favorites that you can dive right into.

9. Five Go to Smuggler’s Top (The Famous Five: Book 4)

Julian, Dick, Anne, George, and their little dog Timmy are spending their Easter break at their friend Sooty Lenoir’s creepy old house, which is surrounded by the misty marsh of Smuggler’s Top. 

This strange house was used as a hideout for smugglers a long time ago. And now, since Mr. Lenoir hates dogs, the children are forced to become smugglers themselves. They hide little Timmy in the winding tunnels and secret staircases that weave their way around the building. 

And when a flashing light sends a signal in the middle of the night, the children head out to investigate in a brand new adventure full of twists, turns, and startling surprises. 

10. Third Year at Malory Towers (Malory Towers: Book 3)

Darrell heads back to Malory Towers to start a brand-new term, and this year, there are a few new faces in her class. 

First, there’s an American student Zerelda Brass, who is far more grown-up than her years would suggest. Then, there’s Wilhelmina, Bill for short, whose obsession with horses always finds its way into every conversation she has. And finally, there’s Mavis, a confident girl with an incredible singing voice, who dreams of one day becoming an opera singer. 

They follow the new student as they navigate life at Malory Towers, with more than a few hiccups along the way.

11. The Mystery of the Invisible Thief (The Five Find-Outers: Book 8)

When a robber strikes their sleepy village, not once, but twice, Daisy, Larry, Fatty, Pip, Bets, and Buster the dog, are immediately on the case. 

The robber’s big, dirty footprints clearly mark his tracks, but despite the evidence left behind, this criminal has another trick up his sleeve; he’s invisible, and invisible things are notoriously hard to find. Can they track him down before Mr. Goon, the village policeman, beats them to it?

12. Fifth Formers of St Clare’s (St. Clare’s: Book 6)

The girls of St. Clare’s boarding school are all grown up. They’re in the fifth form now, and this brings with it a whole new power that they’ve been waiting for for years. 

But some girls, particularly Angela and Mirabel, let their newfound power go to their heads, bossing the younger girls around. Will they learn the error of their ways? 

13. The Magic Faraway Tree (The Faraway Tree: Book 2)

When Rick visited with his cousins Jo, Bessie, and Fanny, he never expected to go on such an incredible adventure. But here he is, standing at the foot of the Magic Faraway Tree, where he’s about to meet an unforgettable cast of characters, including the likes of Moon-Face, Saucepan Man, and Silky the fairy. 

There are different lands to explore on top of the Faraway Tree – from the land of Do-As-You Please to the Land of Topsy Turvy. With the help of his cousins, Rick embarks on a quest to explore them all.

14. Five Go Off to Camp (The Famous Five: Book 7)

Join Julian, Dick, George, Anne, and their mongrel Timmy on a spookier than usual mission as they head off to spend the summer at Mr. Luffy’s remote moorland farm.

When they arrive, it doesn’t take them long to notice the curious trains that seem to appear and disappear in the middle of the night. One minute they’re there, and the next, they’ve vanished, but where do they go? If the gang wants to solve this mystery, they’ll have to follow the tracks into the dark underworld to find out.

Conclusion

Enid Blyton wrote some of the most captivating children’s stories in history. They take us back to an innocent time long before the dawn of modern technology when children spent their days playing outside, finding new adventures at every turn.
