Pretty much every Disney movie ever made has a book companion, and many of the company’s most famous films are based on classic novels, such as Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid, and Peter Pan.

1. Alice
She’s one of the most famous literary characters of all time, but Alice is also an integral part of the Disney family thanks to the 1951 animated movie sensation.
This gentle, innocent, and curious young girl has an active imagination. She loves to try new things, and her sense of adventure leads her down the rabbit hole into a strange and bizarre world known as Wonderland.
As a true daydreamer, Wonderland offers the perfect getaway for Alice and her imaginings, but after a while, she finds herself craving the normality of life upon the surface.
Despite her chaotic surroundings, she holds her own and is pretty self-assured for such a young girl.
2. Baloo
Baloo is a faithful sloth bear who first appeared in Rudyard Kipling’s 1894 story collection, The Jungle Book.
In Kipling’s version, Baloo is serious and strict, but the 1967 animated Disney adaptation transformed him into a sweet, fun-loving, and caring father figure, and that’s exactly how we like to think of him.
As soon as Baloo met Mowgli, the warm-hearted sloth immediately took him under his wing and taught him the ‘bare necessities of life’. I think it’s safe to say that without Baloo to guide him, this lost little boy probably wouldn’t have made it out in the jungle.

3. Cruella de Vil
This aptly named villain from 101 Dalmatians is one of the most memorable characters in Disney history, but not for the right reasons.
She’s mean, nasty, and downright evil, and she’s really got it in for those poor, sweet puppies. Obsessed with their distinctive black and white spots, she wants nothing more than to turn them into a coat.
But who could spend time with these snuggly little pups without falling in love? Cruella de Vil, that’s who. All she’s concerned about is money and appearance, and compassion is the last thing on her mind.
Cruella first appeared in the 1956 novel, The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. But it was the 1961 Disney movie adaptation that really cemented her fame and turned this mean-spirited character into a world-famous icon.
4. Dumbo
Dumbo is the star of the 1941 animated Disney movie of the same name. Throughout the film, this innocent little elephant barely utters a word, but his sweet personality is clear for all to see.
Despite being bullied as an infant for his oversized ears, and enduring all kinds of teasing and torment over the years, he’s nothing but kind and compassionate to everyone he meets.
But he’s also a nervous soul who is frightened by almost everything, including little Timothy Mouse. But despite his fears, he’s determined to help his mother, Mrs. Jumbo, to escape solitary confinement by becoming a world-famous star.
5. The Genie
The Genie is a larger-than-life, loveable blue spirit who lives inside a magic lamp.
Most of us know him from the classic 1992 animated feature film Aladdin, but his character can be traced back much further than that. He first appears in an old folk tale, also called Aladdin, in the Middle Eastern fable collection One Thousand and One Nights, otherwise known as Arabian Nights.
The story goes that Genie has been imprisoned inside the lamp for more than ten thousand years, so it makes sense that he’s super enthusiastic and excitable when he’s finally let out.
The Genie’s main job is to grant wishes, but that’s not the only reason he puts a smile on the face of everyone he meets. He’s a natural comedian with a golden heart and a true friend to Aladdin.
6. Jiminy Cricket
Jiminy Cricket is the well dressed, umbrella wielding, wise-cracking cricket from the 1940 animated Disney movie, Pinocchio.
But Walt Disney didn’t invent Jiminy himself; he was born many decades earlier in Carlo Collodi’s classic Italian children’s novel, The Adventures of Pinocchio.
Jiminy is Pinocchio’s official conscience, sent to guide him on a righteous path to becoming a ‘real boy.’ But that doesn’t mean he’s serious and sensible all the time. This anthropomorphic insect is fun-loving, feisty, and quick-witted, and he appreciates the simple pleasures in life.
That being said, Jiminy is also pretty level-headed, and he’s always willing to share his sage advice with his wooden friend. Whether Pinocchio listens or not is another story.

7. Pocahontas
There are countless Disney princesses, but none quite as unique and inspiring as Pocahontas.
The Native American Warrior Lady was the first Disney princess to be based on a real person, although there are some pretty stark differences between the historical figure and the animated adaptation.
Differences aside, Disney’s Pocahontas is free-spirited, brave, and kind. As the daughter of revered tribal leader Chief Powhatan, she has a deep respect for the natural world and is determined to protect it and her people from foreign invaders.
Pocahontas takes a leap of faith when she enters into a forbidden relationship with the English settler John Smith. But ultimately, she chooses her integrity over romance, and when her land and people are put in jeopardy, she remains fiercely loyal to them.
8. Simba
When we first meet Simba in the 1994 animated Disney movie, The Lion King, he’s an adorable little lion pup. As the son of noble leader Mufasa, he is set to inherit his father’s kingdom of the Pride Lands. But as a youngster, he’s content with playing, exploring, and causing mischief with his best friend, Nala.
But his happy childhood takes a tragic turn when Mufasa is killed, and his evil uncle Scar convinces him he’s responsible for his father’s death. Cast out into a self-imposed exile, Simba spends many years away from his home, but while he’s away, he does a lot of growing up.
He realizes he must confront his troubled past and save the kingdom he inherited. And so, through his newfound bravery, and with a little help from his trusty friends Timon and Pumba, he returns to take his rightful place in the circle of life.
9. Tinker Bell
She might look sweet and innocent, but Peter Pan’s famous sidekick is a feisty little fairy with a serious attitude and red-hot temper.
But despite Tinker Bell’s prickly exterior, she has a good heart and is fiercely loyal to those she loves.
She’s especially devoted to Peter and proud to be part of his inner circle. But her adoration for him brings out her jealous streak, and she takes a particular dislike to Wendy at first, seeing her as a threat. Yet, as time goes on, she softens, realizing there is enough room in Peter’s life for both of them.
10. Winnie the Pooh
This warm-hearted, honey-loving teddy bear was first born from the imagination of author A.A. Milne. A couple of decades later, he made his debut into the Disney franchise in the 1966 short film Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree, and he’s been a regular feature on our screens and in print, ever since.
Pooh is a good-natured, patient, and a generous bear who always has time for others. Admittedly, he’s a little dim, but he’s a great listener and a dear friend to everyone he knows.
Pooh’s weakness is honey. He has an unending appetite for the stuff, and it often gets him into trouble. But with his optimistic spirit and loyal friends such as Christopher Robin, Piglet, and Tigger, he always manages to get out of a pickle.
