JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is one of the longest-running and best-selling manga series in history.
The first issue appeared in Japan’s Weekly Shōnen Jump all the way back in 1987, where the series continued for almost 18 years.
Then, in 2004, JoJo switched platforms, leaving Shōnen Jump to join the popular monthly seinen manga publication, Ultra Jump, and it’s still going strong to this day.
Written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki, the series follows various generations of the powerful Joestar family, who each have very different lives. But they do have one thing in common; a distinctive star-shaped birthmark on their left shoulder.
You may be wondering how such a long-running series manages to stay fresh. But the secret to keeping fans engaged lies in JoJo’s many different story arcs and narratives. Each separate part (of which there are many!) features a whole new group of characters set in a different time period and location.
So, while the Joestar bloodline ties the plot together, the clever, multi-story format means it never gets old.
Jojo’s success is also down to its universal appeal; the series spans multiple genres, including mystery, action, adventure, fantasy, comedy, and horror, just to name a few.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is primarily a manga, but it’s also been adapted multiple times, including in a long-running internationally acclaimed anime series.
The anime has captivated viewers from every corner of the globe and sparked a huge surge in Jojo’s popularity, particularly in the Western world.
How Many Volumes of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Are There?
It’s no surprise that this epic, long-running series has a lot of volumes, but how many are there exactly?
As of today, there are a whopping 131 tankōbon (the Japanese term for individual manga volumes) in the JoJo series, and more are on the way.
The volumes are separated into chapters that span nine-story arcs, each one focusing on a different protagonist from the Joestar family.
Unfortunately for fans in the Western world, some of the later volumes are still only available to read in Japanese. But don’t worry, translators are working hard to get the rest of the series to an English-speaking audience, and for now, there are still plenty of official English editions to be found at Viz Media.
